Abstract

Objective: to apprehend the social representations of obstetrical nurses regarding the care of parturient women in the maternity ward. Method: qualitative study, based on the Theory of Social Representations, according to Moscovici’s principles, carried out with nine obstetric nurses working in a public maternity ward in the Northeast Region of Brazil, from March to July 2020. Data were obtained through interviews, and then were organized and processed in the IRAMUTEQ software. Results: nurses represent parturient care from a functional dimension, expressed through technical and scientific knowledge and their attributions in terms of promotion, protection and rehabilitation of the individual, as well as from the perspective of the lived reality, the difficulties related to the structure and the work processes permeating the daily lives of obstetric nurses. Final considerations: nurses represent the nursing care of parturient women from a technical perspective, adding, however, elements of a scientific, humanistic and unique type of care, such as welcoming, presence, listening, respect and empathy.
