Abstract

Looks at how William Randolph Hearst made a mistake when he condemned the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba in his papers as an act of Spanish sabotage. Use of a slogan by Hearst that urged readers to support a war; Declaration of a war by U.S. President William McKinley to liberate Cuba from the Spaniards; Assertion of most experts that the ship sank as a result of an accidental fuel explosion.
