Abstract

The article argues that the term "autonomous" is misused in the tech industry when describing systems. While these systems may appear independent, they are actually constrained by goals set by human controllers and cannot choose their own goals. The article emphasizes that true autonomy involves the capacity for self-rule and the ability to determine one's own goals. The misuse of the term "autonomous" can have implications for responsibility and rights, as well as potentially divert attention from those responsible for designing and operating these systems. The authors suggest terminating the use of the term "autonomous systems." [Extracted from the article]
