Abstract

Rotator cuff injury is the most common shoulder disease. From the pathogenetic point of view, extrinsic and intrinsic causes are distinguished, among these always more frequent reports are in the literature about the importance of metabolic risk factors. We have reviewed retrospectively our case series of 286 reverse shoulder prosthesis surgeries due to rupture of the rotator cuff and we evaluated the importance of metabolic factors also comparing the group with prevailing post-traumatic extrinsic pathogenesis to the group with prevalent intrinsic degenerative pathogenesis. Is confirmed the the role that overweight - obesity, dyslipidemias, diabetes, smoking, in particular hypertension and thyroid diseases, they can assume in the determinism of the rotator cuff lesion, prospective studies are hoped for further study.
