Abstract

In "Once Upon a Time in Texas," Ron Field challenges popular myths surrounding the Texas Revolution against Mexico by providing a detailed account of the conflict based on historical records from both sides. Field focuses on the military aspects of the revolution, describing the composition, organization, equipment, and training of the Mexican and Texian armed forces. He highlights the differences between the two forces, such as the Texian army being comprised of enthusiastic volunteers while the Mexican army consisted of poorly trained conscripts. Field also discusses the dramatic upset at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, where the seemingly unstoppable advance of Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces was defeated. This book will be of interest to students of military history, those interested in the history of Texas, and those studying the Western expansion of the United States. [Extracted from the article]
