Abstract

The article discusses the question of how to align corporate behavior with the public good. It presents two opposing camps in the debate: the economic liberal camp, which argues that market competition automatically aligns corporate activities with the public good, and the social protectionist camp, which advocates for regulation to address the negative impacts of corporate behavior. The authors propose a corporate social assessment (CSA) that would grade corporations based on their contributions to the public good, with the top-ranked corporations earning rewards and the bottom-ranked corporations contributing to a fund. The article raises concerns about the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing a CSA and suggests that a democratization of corporations may be a more suitable approach to aligning corporate activities with the public good.
