Abstract

The article discusses a program titled "Music in the Black Church: A Kaleidoscope of Colors" that took place at First Congregational Church in Ann Arbor. The program focused on the work of Willis C. Patterson, a distinguished professor emeritus of music at the University of Michigan, and his creation of the Our Own Thing Chorale. The presenters, many of whom were former students of Patterson, discussed topics such as the historical significance of the Negro spiritual, the use of the organ in the Black church, and the repertoire of African American solo vocalists. The program also included performances by various choirs and instrumentalists. [Extracted from the article]
