Abstract

Tens of thousands of farmers in Europe have been protesting against poor economic conditions, including falling incomes, high costs, disruption from the war in Ukraine, and competition from cheap imports. Their discontent has been further fueled by the European Union's announcement of more stringent environmental policies for agriculture, which they believe will worsen their situation. The proposed green policies aim to reduce the farming sector's greenhouse gas emissions and require farmers to allocate a portion of their land to nonproductive features, implement crop rotations, and reduce fertilizer use. Farmers are concerned that these measures will make the European agricultural sector less competitive against imports. Some leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, are calling for changes to guarantee fair prices for farmers and are proposing more relaxed green requirements while still providing agricultural subsidies.
