Abstract
- The honeybee is not only the most used pollinator but an insect model for behavioral studies. With the purpose of facilitating and encouraging behavioral research in honeybees in Colombia, an experimental apparatus for using the Proboscis Extension Response methodology-PER was built. That apparatus allows the evaluation of numerous learning phenomena, mainly related to classical conditioning. The design is based on the Smith and Burden (2014) conditioning apparatus, modifying electronics, controls, and air supply systems. Three experiments were performed to test different configurations of the apparatus and acquisition of conditioned response, specific odor learning, and retention test. The results showed that both small modifications on different parts of the apparatus, as well as different steps not described in the most widespread protocols, may have important implications for the performance of individuals.
