Abstract

The Parteihochschule (PHS) 'Karl Marx' was the central training institute for functionaries of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) in East Germany. The school operated under Stalinist methods and focused on indoctrination through the memorization of the works of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin. The long-time director, Hanna Wolf, played a significant role in enforcing Stalinist indoctrination at the school. Despite some attempts at modernization in the 1980s, the PHS remained a Marxist-Leninist institution until its closure in 1990. The book provides a comprehensive examination of the school and its significance to the East German regime, although it lacks detail on the perspectives of students and instructors.
