Abstract

A recent study suggests that Europe may experience hotter and drier summers in the future due to increased melting of Greenland's ice sheet. The research shows that the release of large amounts of freshwater from Greenland's ice sheet triggers feedback effects that impact the atmospheric jet stream over Europe. These effects, combined with the underlying warming trend from fossil fuel emissions, could lead to more extreme heatwaves and droughts in Europe. The study also highlights the missed inclusion of these feedback effects in computer models. Researchers predict that Europe will experience stronger heatwaves and droughts in the coming years as a result of increased melting. [Extracted from the article]
