Abstract

Work engagement (WE) is an affective and emotional state resulting from connecting three dimensions: vigour, dedication, and absorption. This study considered articles on work engagement, citing antecedents and consequences described in Brazilian and international research. An integrative literature review was carried out in the Scielo.org and Pepsic databases, using the descriptors "Work engagement" or "Engajamento no Trabalho" or "Compromiso Laboral", with the following inclusion criteria: research papers that presented empirical results published between 2005 and 2020 and available in Portuguese, English or Spanish. At the end of the eligibility process, nineteen (19) articles were analysed. The results highlight the growing interest in the phenomenon and the current nature of the research. Among the most studied audiences are health, education, and management professionals. Integrating scientific production on WE provides an overview of the subject, considering the related phenomena. Interventions that promote WE, including the development of personal resources, diversity of tasks and appropriate working conditions - can, on the one hand, promote well-being, quality of life and health at the workplace and, on the other, bring efficiency and better results for organisations.
