Abstract

The article discusses the fortifications built by the Wichita people, also known as the Kitikiti'sh or Eminent Ones, on the Great Plains. These fortifications, which were complex and initially mistaken for European origin, were constructed to protect the Wichita's newfound wealth from enemy incursions during the explosive growth of the Great Plains bison trade. The article highlights the ongoing research conducted by archaeologists to understand the construction and purpose of these forts. The Wichita's history stretches back more than 1,000 years, and their forts evolved in size and complexity over time to provide better protection against new threats. [Extracted from the article]
