Abstract

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that wearing a brace at night is an effective alternative for treating moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in patients who reject wearing a brace full time. The study, conducted in Sweden, compared the outcomes of patients who used self-managed physical activity combined with nighttime bracing, scoliosis-specific exercise, or physical activity alone. The researchers found that night bracing combined with physical activity was more effective in preventing curve progression than the other treatment options. However, it is important to note that nighttime bracing alone is not sufficient for success, and the number of hours the brace is worn is crucial. The study emphasizes the need for physicians to consider the psychological impact and self-esteem of adolescents when prescribing bracing. [Extracted from the article]
