Abstract
- The article explores the concept of solidarity with the poor and the relationship between poverty and spirituality. The author reflects on their own experience of unexpectedly qualifying for government assistance despite their privilege. They discuss the prevalence of financial precarity in America, particularly among younger generations, and highlight the disproportionate impact on women, people of color, and immigrants. The article references biblical teachings on wealth and poverty, emphasizing the message of love, equity, and the preferential treatment of the poor. The author argues for the importance of witnessing and protesting against poverty, both spiritually and materially, and suggests rejecting the prosperity gospel and conspicuous consumption as steps towards solidarity with the poor. They conclude by urging readers to act in accordance with their faith and commitment to economic justice, regardless of their social position. [Extracted from the article]
