Abstract

A recent article in the British Journal of Dermatology reports on the emergence of a cluster of multidrug-resistant Trichophyton indotineae, a fungus that causes recalcitrant dermatophytosis, in China. While previous cases of this infection have been reported in other countries, this is the first domestic case in China without a history of foreign travel, suggesting local transmission. The article presents 14 new cases of T. indotineae infection, describing the clinical features and resistance of the pathogenic isolates. The strains were found to be highly resistant to multiple antifungals, including terbinafine, itraconazole, fluconazole, posaconazole, and griseofulvin. The authors recommend considering T. indotineae infection in challenging-to-treat dermatophytosis cases and emphasize the need for ongoing public health surveillance to monitor the potential epidemic.
