Abstract

The article discusses the completion of the Winthrop Center, a mixed-use tower in Boston that is now the tallest in the downtown core. The building is notable for its green credentials, including its achievement of Passive House certification, making it the world's largest Passive House office building. Passive House is a methodology focused on energy efficiency, and the building's use of this standard has resulted in significant energy savings compared to other buildings in Boston. The article also highlights the building's other attractive features, such as flexible office layouts, shared amenities, and a ground-floor space for public activities. The project's success with Passive House has helped advance the strategy as a mainstream market solution, and Massachusetts has even adopted new code provisions requiring Passive House design for certain building types.
