Abstract

This article discusses the ethical concerns surrounding the use of generative AI in engineering. It presents a hypothetical situation where an engineering professor discovers an extraneous phrase in a paper he is reviewing, suspecting that the author used ChatGPT, an AI system, to generate some of the content. The author admits to using ChatGPT but claims it was only to improve his writing. However, the lack of evidence and the ethical concerns raised by generative AI lead to the rejection of the paper. The article emphasizes the need for understanding the appropriate uses and limitations of generative AI and highlights the potential for incorrect or misleading information to be produced. It also discusses the ethical implications of misattributing authorship and the importance of transparency and accountability in the engineering profession. [Extracted from the article]
