Abstract

This article, published in the Arab Journal of Interventional Radiology, discusses the use of bronchial artery embolization (BAE) as a minimally-invasive technique for managing moderate to massive hemoptysis. The study, conducted at a London teaching hospital, analyzed data from 141 patients who underwent 173 BAE procedures between 2002 and 2022. The results showed that BAE was successful in controlling hemoptysis in the short term, but recurrence was an issue. Risk factors for recurrence included aspergilloma, cystic fibrosis, and sarcoidosis. The study also found that there were neurological complications, such as stroke, associated with BAE. The authors recommend early intervention with repeat embolization and source control for patients with aspergilloma or infection, and emphasize the importance of preprocedure counseling to address the risk of stroke.
