Abstract

Holtec International, a nuclear services firm, has received a conditional loan guarantee of up to $1.52 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Programs Office to restart the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Michigan. The plant ceased operations in May 2022 and was acquired by Holtec, who initially planned to decommission it. However, Holtec and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed interest in reopening the plant. The project aims to repurpose shuttered energy infrastructure and reduce air pollution, with the Biden administration supporting nuclear energy as part of its clean energy goals. The plant could potentially restart by the end of 2025 and accommodate small modular reactor units by mid-2030. [Extracted from the article]
