Abstract
- "Made in Lancashire: A Collective Biography of Assisted Migrants from Lancashire to Victoria 1852–1853" is a book that examines the lives of 225 assisted migrants from Lancashire, England, who traveled to the newly created colony of Victoria, Australia in 1852–1853. The author explores various questions, such as the motivations behind the migrants' decision to leave Britain and the influence of Chartist values on their aspirations for a better life. The book challenges assumptions about the skills and occupations of assisted migrants and highlights their contributions to the development of Victoria, including their involvement in the gold industry and their efforts to establish a more democratic society. The study also considers the experiences of the second generation of migrants and the role of women in the colony. Overall, "Made in Lancashire" provides valuable insights into the history of European settlement in Victoria. [Extracted from the article]
