Abstract

The ceramic industry holds a considerable position in Turkey's economy, with our country emerging as a frontrunner in the manufacturing of ceramic coating materials and sanitaryware. Pottery products form another distinct branch of ceramic production. The disposal of defective products in the industry leads to the generation of waste, causing environmental pollution and presenting challenges in terms of storage and disposal. Considering the substantial volume of waste produced, it becomes imperative to explore diverse avenues for the effective utilization of the sector's waste. The mechanical properties of geopolymer mortars produced by using ceramic tile factory filter-press cake, sanitaryware, and pottery wastes with and without fly ash with different activators were examined in this study. The mortar mixtures with a liquid/binder ratio of 0.40, incorporating NaOH and Na2SiO3, were subjected to thermal curing at 90°C for 24 hours. 7 and 28-day flexural and compressive strength tests were applied to the samples. The flexural strengths of mortars produced with Na2SiO3 for 28 days were found to be in the range of 4.4 MPa-11 MPa, while those produced with NaOH ranged from 3.4 to 7.6 MPa. The compressive strengths of ceramic waste binary mixtures and fly ash ternary mixtures surpassed values of 30 MPa. The study demonstrates that ceramic industry wastes can be effectively employed in geopolymer production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
