Abstract

This article from Interior Design magazine features the renovation of a Georgian estate in rural eastern Ireland. The clients desired an "industrial" interior, but what they really wanted was an unpolished and raw aesthetic. The design team used rustic stones and metals, along with classic contemporary furnishings, to highlight the original beauty of the house. Stone was used to frame views between rooms and create defined spaces while maintaining the historic layout. The materials, including marble and travertine, were kept as close to nature as possible with a subtle matte finish. The design also incorporated interventions, such as walls and furniture, to interrupt the flow of the space. The main suite features a sweeping space with a freestanding tub in its own bathing nook and cabinets fronted in mirrored stainless steel to create room screens. The design also maximized natural light through skylights and glass floors. The house embraces a deliberate and not precious aesthetic, with materials chosen for their raw feel and the expectation that the interior finishes will change over time. The design concept was inspired by the texture, beauty, and richness of the house's imperfections. The project team included Fiona Stone, Stefania Bota, PSP Architects, Miller Brothers, Christoff, Emerald Decor, and PJ Grealis. The article also includes a list of product sources used in the renovation. [Extracted from the article]
