Abstract

This article explores the challenges faced by communities and emergency responders in dealing with wildfires and natural disasters in the context of climate change. It discusses the limitations of scientific models and the need for a shift in knowledge hierarchies and emergency response approaches. The text also highlights the exclusion of Indigenous fire practices and knowledge, which has led to more intense wildfires. It emphasizes the importance of interagency partnerships and reclaiming Indigenous fire practices to mitigate the risks of destructive wildfires. The devastating impact of wildfires on the natural landscape and the cultural significance of the burned areas for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are also discussed, along with their efforts to reintroduce fire and restore ecological balance.
