Abstract

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is polling at 16% in some national presidential surveys, which is enough to potentially impact the outcome of the election. It is unclear which candidate he would spoil the most, as both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump lose the same percentage of votes when Kennedy is included. Kennedy's environmentalist background and vaccine skepticism could appeal to both Democrats and anti-establishment Trump supporters. However, getting on the ballot is a challenge, as Kennedy estimates it will cost $15 million to gather the necessary signatures in all 50 states. The two major parties control the statehouses and have set rules that make it difficult for third-party candidates to compete. Kennedy has the potential to cause either candidate to lose a swing state by a narrow margin, which could shift the election in favor of the other candidate. Supporters of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and the Kennedy family are unlikely to back Kennedy. Kennedy has gained ballot access in Michigan and Utah, and his campaign claims to have met criteria in several other states.
