Abstract

Reports that the U.S. President George W. Bush administration will release documents from Judge John G. Roberts' tenure in the White House counsel's office and his earlier job working for the attorney general, but will not make public papers covering the four years he spent as principal deputy solicitor general starting in 1989. How the decision fulfills a request for disclosure of documents by Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which will hold confirmation hearings for Roberts, Bush's choice to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor; How it falls short of the disclosure sought by Democrats; Belief of Democrats that files from Roberts' work under the first President George Bush could shed light on the nominee's thinking about a variety of issues; How, under law, the White House has final say over what presidential documents are made public; Debate over attorney-client privilege.
