Abstract
- Scalp acupuncture, a specialized branch of traditional Chinese medicine, integrates classical acupuncture principles with modern neuroanatomy. Developed primarily in the 1970s, it has evolved into various styles, each offering unique methodologies and clinical applications. This review paper delves into the origins, definitions, and different styles of scalp acupuncture, including Huang’s, Fang’s, Tang’s, Jiao’s, Zhu’s, Yu’s, Lin’s, and Yamamoto’s Scalp Acupuncture, along with the International Standardized Scalp Acupuncture system. It explores the anatomical basis of scalp acupuncture, detailing the skull’s structure, surface landmarks, and the scalp’s tissues, while examining the cerebral hemispheres and lobes’ functional aspects. The paper emphasizes the therapeutic potential of scalp acupuncture in treating a wide range of conditions, from neurological disorders and chronic pain to mental health issues. Clinical studies are reviewed, highlighting the modality’s effectiveness in managing various medical conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder, post-stroke depression, ischemic stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. The mechanism of action, involving the nervous system and the release of neurotransmitters, is explored to understand the biological processes underlying scalp acupuncture’s therapeutic effects. The review also addresses the contraindications of scalp acupuncture, ensuring patient safety and treatment appropriateness. Overall, the paper presents scalp acupuncture as a holistic, non-invasive treatment option, reflecting the integration of ancient wisdom and modern scientific understanding in healthcare.
