Abstract
- Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the valleys, and plains to the west of the Sierras Centrales in Argentina oscillated between their relations with Cuyo and the attraction of the city of Córdoba. The mountain range and its many rivers were a significant orographic obstacle and helped to give these communities a distinctive identity. In this study, we explore from a historical environmental perspective how this established configuration was disrupted at the end of the 19th century, within the framework of state consolidation and the Atlantic reorientation of the Argentine economy. Thus, we analyze how the pre-existing dynamics and relationship with water and mountain runoff were a limit between the mountain valleys and the thriving agro-livestock economy of the Pampas. Traditional historiographic sources were used -reports, stories, newspapers, among others- together with historical cartography and GIS software. The latter, allowed to shed new light on some previously ignored elements around the hidrosocial and transportation system of that landlocked province [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
