Abstract
- "On Minimalism: Documenting a Musical Movement" is a book that seeks to expand the understanding of minimalist music by including the perspectives of overlooked artists. The book presents primary source documents that introduce over one hundred composers, performers, artists, critics, and scholars who contributed to the minimalist movement. It is organized into three parts, tracing the origins and early years of minimalism, its expansion and the rise of postminimalism, and its legacy and current influence. The book challenges the traditional narrative of minimalist music and provides a new and accessible resource for future scholars. It also highlights the contributions of women and BIPOC individuals and includes a listening guide to help readers engage with the sound world of minimalism. While it acknowledges the significance of the "Big Four" composers, it offers a fresh perspective on the development of minimalism as a musical movement. [Extracted from the article]
