Abstract

Lawmakers have introduced a new bill called the No Foreign Emoluments Without Congressional Consent Act, which aims to restrict top leaders in the federal government from accepting money from foreign governments or their proxies. The bill would require individuals covered by the legislation, including the president, vice president, members of Congress, agency heads, top White House staff, and other senior officials, to obtain consent from Congress before accepting payments from foreign governments while in office and for two years after leaving. Offenders would face civil and criminal penalties, and federal officials would be required to disclose any foreign payments they receive. The bill is seen as a response to concerns about President Trump's businesses benefiting from foreign governments during his time in office. [Extracted from the article]
