Abstract

This article provides a firsthand account of Kaul Ole's experiences as a laborer in Papua New Guinea under the Australian government's Highlands Labour Scheme from 1950 to 1974. Kaul, a member of the Kawaleku tribe, worked in coastal regions and displayed qualities such as courage, discipline, diligence, and resilience during his three deployments to Rabaul and Sogeri. The article also offers insights into Kaul's upbringing, the cultural practices of his tribe, and the colonial history of the Chimbu people. Kaul describes the discipline and punishments imposed by colonial officers, known as kiaps, but also expresses respect for them. After completing his contracts, Kaul returned home with wealth and status, leading to his marriage and involvement in village leadership. He eventually converted to Christianity and witnessed Papua New Guinea's transition to independence in 1975. Kaul passed away in 2023. [Extracted from the article]
