Abstract

A recent discovery of fossils in Australia has provided new insights into the ancient relatives of platypuses and echidnas that lived alongside dinosaurs 100 million years ago. The fossils, which were found in the opal-mining town of Lightning Ridge, include nine fragments of fossilized jawbones, three of which belong to previously unknown species. The fossils are made of opal and have only now been classified and studied. The findings suggest that there is still much undiscovered diversity in the ancient mammal species that lived during the age of dinosaurs. [Extracted from the article]
