Abstract
- Significance: While many technologies exist to address the wide variety of sustainability challenges facing humanity, many technologies are not adopted at sufficient scale or are used incorrectly, negating the positive impacts. This commentary introduces the discipline of human factors and ergonomics, demonstrating four features that facilitate the effective design and implementation of eco-socio-technical systems for sustainability. An example of the URBWAT research project, which implemented a nature-based solution in an informal settlement to collect and treat greywater, is given to illustrate how these four features operate in practice.
