Abstract

The principle function of alveolar macrophage (AM) is to phagocytize and clear foreign antigens, which is the first line of defense against various invading pathogenic bacteria in mammalian lungs. AM has diversified functions mainly including antigen presentation and immune regulation, and it also plays pivotal roles in maintaining the homeostasis of the pulmonary immune system and is highly involved in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In-depth investigations have demonstrated that functions of AM are regulated by lipid metabolism, which participates in metabolic reprogramming in COPD, and thus inducing functional phenotypes. The present review mainly summarizes lipid metabolism change in AM, and its effects on inflammation, as well as the clinical applications in COPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
