Abstract

This article discusses the continued use of halothane as an anesthetic, particularly in Africa, despite its removal from most high-income countries due to safety concerns. The author, a practitioner in Cameroon, acknowledges the dangers associated with halothane but highlights its affordability compared to other options. The article explores the complications and adaptations made to ensure safe use of halothane, including the management of myocardial depression and liver toxicity. The author also discusses the longer induction and emergence times of halothane and its advantages in certain surgical procedures. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for better healthcare financing and prioritization to switch to safer alternatives. [Extracted from the article]
