Abstract

Background: In May 2022, the first interhuman transmissions of monkeypox were detected in places different form the African endemic countries, no related to imported cases and without international travels. In addition, the first declared cases of this outbreak had a different epidemiology than the cases previously described in the literature. Objectives: epidemiological description of the cases diagnosed at Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital; compare the characteristics of our patients with those published by different official organizations; analyze the possible causes of the onset and subsequent decline of the outbreak. Material and methods: retrospective descriptive observational study of the cases of monkeypox treated at Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital, from the beginning of the outbreak until November 2022. Results: 23 cases were reported, all male, with a mean age of 34.4. All cases presented rash, in the genital and anal area (69.5 %), face (43.5 %), and upper and lower limbs (30.4 %). In addition, they presented fever (37.5 %) and adenopathies (21.7 %). 91.3 % declared previous risky sexual relations with other men. One patient presented complications that required hospitalization. All cases progressed positively. Conclusions: Our patients present characteristics similar to those published by different official organizations. The action of Public Health has been very important in controlling the outbreak.
