US Air Force airfields are partners in airpower with aircraft, but they are also centers of gravity that cannot maneuver at tempo, making them a potential weakness for adversaries to exploit. If the Air Force is to prevail in great power competition, it needs to rethink airfield organization. Systems thinking can help the Air Force reorganize its airfields into maneuverable rhizomatic teams, mitigating the shortfalls of traditionally organized airfields.
