Abstract

A 37-year-old man experienced neurotoxicity in the form of catatonia while undergoing immunosuppressant therapy with tacrolimus after a kidney transplant. The man had a traumatic childhood and had previously exhibited combativeness during dialysis. He presented to the emergency department with confusion and later developed severe psychomotor retardation and verbal unresponsiveness. The man's tacrolimus levels were found to be elevated, confirming the suspicion of tacrolimus-induced neurotoxicity. Treatment with lorazepam and other medications led to a rapid improvement and complete regression of catatonia, and the tacrolimus was eventually discontinued. [Extracted from the article]
