Abstract

This article explores the concept of suffering and its relationship to art and practical wisdom. It distinguishes between suffering as an art and suffering as a virtue, emphasizing the importance of practical reason in understanding and responding to suffering. The article also discusses the nature of suffering, stating that it is a response to the absence of good rather than inherently evil. The author suggests that knowledge, friendship, and beauty are three goods that play a role in how one should suffer. Additionally, the text discusses the role of beauty, virtues, and Jesus in the context of suffering. It argues that experiencing beauty can provide pleasure and remind individuals of the goodness of creation, even in times of sorrow. The virtues of hope, gratitude, and participation in Christ's suffering are presented as essential for suffering well. The author suggests that accepting suffering and cultivating these virtues can lead to a closer relationship with God and the eventual fulfillment of the Kingdom of Heaven.
