Abstract

In the article "MOUNTAINS BEFORE MOUNTAINEERING: The call of the peaks before the modern age," Dawn Hollis explores the history of mountains before the era of modern mountaineering. Contrary to the belief that people in the early modern period were afraid of mountains, Hollis's research indicates that mountains actually inspired curiosity and fascination. She draws on the accounts of European travelers from that time to tell the story, while also highlighting the knowledge of the people who lived within the mountains. The article also touches on early modern mountain science and Hollis's personal relationship with mountains. [Extracted from the article]
