Abstract

The concept of power has a plurality of meanings in Hobbes' work, being used in physics, anthropology, in his reflections on law and politics, as well as in the discourse on God and his attributes. In this article, I will examine the Hobbesian concept of power in the Short Tract, in his dialogue with the Aristotelian distinction of power and act, that is, the physical concept of power through which movements are explained. What I intend to indicate is that this concept is forged in the Short Tract in opposition to the Aristotelian and scholastic concept, however problematic the first formulation of this concept may be. I intend to indicate how Hobbes founds a double source of determinism in the Short Tract, a source that will become one with the reformulation of the concept of power in later texts.
