Abstract

Life cycle assessments of building materials for load‐bearing structures depending on the assessment systems in the DACH region Due to the complexity of the results of life cycle assessments, efforts are being made to summarise the wealth of indicators into a single meaningful value as the result of a life cycle assessment. Such fully aggregated assessment methods characterise and weight individual indicators and their effects and convert them into point systems. The ecological indicators used for the calculation are based on building material‐related data sets which, acc. to the standard, should at least declare the production, disposal and reuse or recycling phases. However, databases used in practice currently only fulfil these requirements to a limited extent. The database used in Austria, for example, only considers production, in Switzerland production and disposal are used and in Germany all three phases are included, but not always completely. A comparison at building material level shows that, depending on the data basis and assessment method, findings and guidelines for action vary to a great extent. The results of life cycle assessments should therefore always be considered in relation to the data source used. The work shows that KBOB and ÖKOBAUDAT databases, which include the production and disposal of building materials, and the ecological scarcity method are recommended. The baubook database and the Oekoindex OI3 currently provide only limited usable results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
