Abstract

The article discusses the increasing interest in potable water reuse as water resources become scarcer in the Colorado River basin and other regions. Potable reuse involves treating wastewater effluent to drinking water standards and using it as a local drinking water supply. Despite public concerns, pilot plants have demonstrated the safety of treatment methods. Multiple multibillion-dollar potable reuse programs are in design and pilot phases, with some already in operation. California is particularly active in advancing potable reuse, with several large-scale projects underway. However, challenges include the high costs and the need for a regulatory framework.
