Abstract

The article discusses the search for the tjakura, a culturally significant and vulnerable lizard species in Australia's deserts. The tjakura is important to First Nations people and is celebrated in art, dance, and song. However, its population has been declining due to threats such as feral animals and unmanaged bushfires. Indigenous rangers are playing a vital role in protecting the species by controlling feral cats and re-establishing traditional fire regimes. The article also highlights the Mulyamiji March monitoring program, which involves Indigenous rangers, scientists, and school children conducting surveys to gather data on tjakura populations. The program aims to create a powerful dataset to monitor trends in the national population and is also focused on cultural celebrations and knowledge sharing. [Extracted from the article]
