Abstract

Classification of fungi dates back to the nineteenth century. Earlier system of taxonomy involved certain key characteristics like, type of nutrition, cellular nature, motility, morphology of spores and reproductive structures. Recent advances in science have enlightened the road to diversity studies up to type species level. Molecular phylogeny remains the most latest methods of classification. Fungi are classified based on molecular characterization by various techniques like Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequencing, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), whole genome sequences (WGS), Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCO), target enrichment and Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) sequencing. In this review fungal taxonomy from past to present is discussed with the taxonomical chart. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
