Abstract

This article tells the story of Thea Alvin, a renowned stonemason artist based in rural Vermont. Alvin's backyard sculpture park features gravity-defying stonework, including a 100-foot-long stone helix, undulating walls, ponds, and a pizza oven. Despite experiencing a devastating fire in 2017 that destroyed her barn, studio, and half of her house, Alvin was determined to rebuild and make her home beautiful again. With the help of friends and community members, she slowly rebuilt her barn and house, incorporating unique and artistic elements into the design. Alvin's passion for creating beautiful things every day helps her combat depression and stay positive, even in the face of challenges like drought and poverty. The article also highlights Alvin's love for stone and her extensive experience in creating sculptures around the world. She sees stone as a contemplative material that carries the energy and intentions of those who worked with it in the past. Through her work, Alvin aims to create mysteries and stories that will be pondered by future generations. Overall, this article showcases Alvin's resilience, creativity, and dedication to her craft.
