Abstract
- The Ipiranga Museum in Brazil has used historical maps in its exhibitions to tell the story of Brazil's independence, but the interpretation and display of these maps have evolved over time. The article discusses how maps can support contradictory narratives and challenge traditional cartographic scholarship. It also examines the museum's past focus on colonial cartography, which silenced indigenous contributions. The museum has recently shifted its focus to highlight indigenous agency and territorial knowledge, reflecting a broader movement towards decolonization and inclusivity in archives. The 2022 exhibitions aim to challenge conventional understandings of mapping and shed light on indigenous languages and labor in colonial São Paulo. [Extracted from the article]
