Abstract

Real Madrid has recently completed a $1.27 billion upgrade of its historic home, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The renovation focused on diversifying activities and increasing annual income, rather than simply increasing seating capacity. The upgraded stadium features an enlarged museum, a skywalk with dining and nightlife amenities, improved VIP seating areas, a retractable pitch, video and digital installations, a fully closable roof, and a new stainless-steel envelope. The project faced delays due to lawsuits, but the stadium remained in use during construction. The transformed venue hosted its first concert by Taylor Swift in May and is expected to host around 60 music and sport events per year. The stadium's privileged location in the heart of Madrid has economic benefits for the city, but it also poses challenges for the surrounding neighborhood, including noise and disturbance.
