The Rise of the AI Co-Pilot: Lessons for Design from Aviation and Beyond.

This article takes insight from the aviation industry to present a proposal for the future of human-artificial intelligence (AI) interaction. The article discusses human factors engineering in aviation and Lisanne Bainbridge’s 1983 paper “Ironies of Automation” with an emphasis on human monitoring of artificial intelligence systems and de-skilling as a result of automation. The article concludes with a discussion on the future of human-AI interaction including human agency and critical thinking skills.
