JOSEF BREU - ATLASREDAKTEUR UND TOPONOMAST.

In this contribution the personality of Josef Breu from the personal perspective of his employee since 1977, his later deputy and successor is described, and highlights concerning his main scientific fields of activity and greatest achievements are presented: the editing and publication of the "Atlas of the Danubian Countries" between 1970 and 1989, a regional geography of the countries along the middle and lower Danube in thematic maps, and toponomastics, where Breu became a formative figure in the "United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names" (UNGEGN) and founded the "Working Group for Cartographic Toponomastics" ("Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Kartographische Ortsnamenkunde", AKO), the Austrian expert committee for geographical names.
